“Aggregate” is the sand, stone and gravel part of the recipe which becomes concrete. Concrete is usually poured into place and the surface smoothed off to make the solid platform that we are all familiar with.

“Exposed Aggregate” is when the top layer of wet concrete is washed away to expose the aggregate … the sand, stone and gravel mentioned above. This is not necessarily going to be easy to walk on, so we smooth it to make it comfortable for your feet. This will give texture and design to the surface. Since the texture randomly appears, each exposed aggregate area can be considered unique.

This is an extremely popular choice, for a variety of reasons. It looks good … aesthetically it is a great finish for driveways and pathways, enhancing both large and small expanses of plain concrete. As well as this, it is slip-resistant. The irregular surface gives better traction, particularly in the wet weather. You can understand how this makes it very popular for driveways and pathways. It gives traction to the car’s wheels, and also for your feet when getting out of your car.

Exposed aggregate is also popular for pool decks, patios, and all areas exposed to the weather. We can vary the amount of aggregate as required for particular areas. Around the pool, you want exposed aggregate to reduce the possibility that people may slip and fall, but you don’t want too much aggregate to make it uncomfortable to walk on in your wet bare feet. We are aware of all these needs and can advise you on what is best in your circumstances.

As well as this, you have a choice in what particular aggregate is used, its size, its coarseness, and even if you want it to be polished.

Exposed aggregate needs to be sealed, but apart from that it requires minimum maintenance, just occasional cleaning.

Hopefully this has explained the benefits that exposed aggregate offers for so many areas in your property: on the driveway, around the pool, on the patio … anywhere you need it. We have been particularly thinking of residential properties, but of course the same options and benefits will apply for commercial and industrial areas, and we would be happy to answer queries from business owners as well.

Your exposed aggregate areas will look good for many years into the future. Our contractors are very experienced in the installation of exposed aggregate concrete, and have the answers for all your questions.
